CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women's cross country team competed at the Beaver Classic today finishing third out of 16 teams. This was the last race before the Pac-12 Championships next weekend.
The distance today was a 6,000 meter course where the girls ran three 2K loops around Avery Park in Corvallis.
Oregon State’s line up for the Beaver Classic was mostly freshmen. Latane Cox,Sabrah de Voir, Lacey London and Shannon Mahoney were the freshmen wearing the Orange and Black this weekend along with veterans Marsha Lampi, Whitney Pitmanand Hilary Sharpe.
“I was pleased with the race today,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “It was a really good field today. The overall winner today was 11th in the NCAA last year in the 10K. So the goal is that, it’s not always how you start a season, it is how you finish. For all seven of them, they finished on a high note.”
Marsha Lampi led the way for the Beavers today finishing first for the team and 20th overall. She finished with a time of 23:13. Whitney Pitman finished second for Oregon State right behind Lampi finishing in 21st place overall with a time of 23:14.
Freshman Sabrah de Voir completed the race third for the Beavers finishing in 24th place overall with a time of 23:21. Lacey London finished fourth for Oregon State and placed 25th overall with a time of 23:26.
Latane Cox rounded out the Beavers scoring five finishing in 29th place overall with a time of 23:47. Shannon Mahoney finished a few steps behind Cox placing 31st overall with a time of 23:52. Hilary Sharpe finishing in sixth for the Beavers placed 38th overall finishing with a time of 24:33.
“We have three freshmen that are going to run in the Pac-12 meet, we have this group that we raced today and we have another group that we have redshirted this fall,” Sullivan said. “The combination of those groups and the focus, commitment and work they have put in has been well received by everybody. It has been encouraging and it is fun to see where the program is moving.”
The Beavers will return to action when they travel to Phoenix, Ariz. to race in the Pac-12 Championships on October 29. The women’s race is set to start at 10:00 a.m.
